A Course in Miracles: The Newest of New Thought
(2011)
Given at the annual colloquium of The
Johnnie Colemon Theological Seminary, May 5-7,
2011.
Thirty five years after its publication in
1976, A Course in Miracles (ACIM) has become
one of the most popular and perplexing
phenomena of contemporary American
spirituality. ACIM has been both shunned and
embraced by the larger New Thought community.
There is spirited debate over whether ACIM
belongs in New Thought, due primarily to its
“channeled” authorship and other sociological
factors. The author measured ACIM against the
Declaration of Principles from the
International New Thought Alliance and found
ACIM to comply with these criteria.
Additionally, a poll of Religious Science
ministers was conducted as to their acceptance
of ACIM teachings. Although it does not derive
from the New Thought “family tree,” the
research leads us to the conclusion that ACIM
is the newest of New Thought with great
potential for growing the movement.

Ernest Holmes: Mind Mapping the Genius of the
New Christianity
(2010)
Given at the annual colloquium of The
Johnnie Colemon Theological Seminary, May
20-22, 2010.
The dearth of Bible scholarship in Religious
Science is largely due to the fact that it is
difficult to map the mind of a great thinker as
its founder, Ernest Holmes. This paper supplies
both a mind mapping technique and its
application to Ernest Holmes’ text The Science
of Mind.
It is a widely held misconception that The
Science of Mind is a synthesis of truths from
all world religions. While that is a nice sound
byte, it is not supported in the textbook.
There are a handful of passing references to
scriptures from other religions, yet their
combined numbers are less than one percent of
the total Bible references found within the
text. Dr. Holmes identified himself as a
Christian, and his manner of speaking and
writing relied heavily on the Bible. The
research leads us to the conclusion that the
Science of Mind teaching is rather a new breed
of Christianity based on the Bible, and
suggests why this finding is of great benefit
to the larger spiritual community.
